The world doesn't have very much serious virtuoso music for double-bass, let alone self-multiplying double-bass through the miracles of modern home-recording technology, so this is an essential album for the connoisseur. And it's playful & thoughtful at the same time, so you totally need it in your collection.
I came back to this album and was so entranced by the ambience of the recording and how deftly it captured these uncertain times. There's something to be said for setting up a recording of an instrument in a room and capturing that air. This is deep, emotionally complex music that sounds great. When will you play in Melbourne, Helen?!
'dormant, I lay.' is a compilation of multi-tracked double bass recordings, all captured on a ZOOM H4 in a tiny Dutch apartment amidst the peak of European lockdown numero uno (April 2020).
The music depicts the apathy and uncertainty felt amidst an unprecedented era in our shared timeline of life; yet, a peacefulness remains in the belief that this chapter is temporary... a period of learning and appreciation of things we never previously appreciated.
